TIE Bomber

TIE Bomber from the DK Incredible Cross Sections series of books. Seen first in Episode IV fighting for the Galactic Empire, capable of carrying concussion missiles, proton torpedoes, proton rockets, space mines, proton bombs, & thermal detonators. I illustrated a lot of these weapons while working on the Imperial ships. This was sketched with a pencil in several stages while being approved by Lucasfilm. The final pencil work was inked and then painted in gouache. Still one of my favourite ships today. Appearances: Star Wars Rebels, Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi, The Empire Strikes Back

Final paint in gouache and made to feel solid by using a .1 mm thick ink pen. I used an airbrush to add some glows and the shines in the classic TIE cockpit window. I also have to be mindful of what background colour it will be printed on.

First stage with a very loose pencil style I explore angles and textures for the cutaway as well as possible cutaway shapes that will still help your eye see what the ship looks like, its easy to turn a cutaway into a mess of detail.

Adding more detail with annotations so the approval loop can start, over the years we produced a list of technologies each vehicle needed to have, for instance life support or repulser lifts and the shape and colours became standard for each Generation.

Final pencil finished, the construction lines, perspective grid and ellipse centres are erased to reveal the finished vehicle. Takes up to 2 weeks to get here.

My favourite stage, I love inking the art, I add more detail and battle damage to the exterior, I can start to think about colour and light source so I can go straight to paint with a plan! This stage takes 3 to 4 days.
